Opportunity Overview

The VP, Finance of Alberta Enterprise Corporation will lead the operational finance activities and support the operational financial oversight of Alberta Enterprise Corporation reporting directly to the CEO and will be based in Edmonton, Alberta. The perfect candidate will be passionate about organizational success and will be key in the support of Alberta Enterprise’s mission, goals, and values. The VP, Finance will work in unison with upper management and key stakeholders to lead the company’s financial strategy. The ideal candidate will encompass strong leadership and communication skills in a way that allows them to coordinate the financial services, budget and capital planning, reporting, and risk management of the organization. As this role involves significant communication with internal and external stakeholders, broad and extensive organizational experience is a must. Strategic thinking in this role will be key to achieving overall company success.


  • Direct report to Chief Executive Officer
  • Oversee financial matters and finance team
  • Support the CEO with business and financial strategy
  • Establish and maintain strategic direction of Alberta Enterprise Corporation
  • Understand the economic and financial environment that may affect Alberta Enterprise (Government, Industry, Funds, etc.)
  • Effectively communicate corporate financial strategy to internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage financial teams within the organization responsible for financial reporting, tax, treasury, and risk management activities
  • Appropriately delegate financial responsibility to finance team members
  • Perform and oversee forecasting and budgeting activities for the organization
  • Provide support in the review and evaluation of company investment opportunities
  • Monitor and communicate operational and financial needs of the company to CEO
  • Work in collaboration with senior leadership team to develop and manage financial activities of the company including capital budgets and forecasts
  • Develop and use financial models to understand and communicate potential financial decisions
  • Understand and ensure compliance with intricate fund management regulations
  • Maintain and manage key stakeholder relations
  • Development and management of an efficient internal control environment
  • Communication of overall control effectiveness to CEO and Board (as required)
  • Provide support to audit committee as required
  • Ensure and manage appropriate and effective risk management techniques
  • Present and develop capital budgets and forecasts in collaboration with the CEO
  • Communicate recommended changes in the financial direction of the company to the CEO and upper management
  • Review financial reports and documents and other financial data before final review by CEO
  • Maintain effective team environment in all finance functions of the organization
  • Continually monitor financial work environment and communicate any recommendations to CEO
  • Attend all Board meetings

  • 10+ years finance/accounting experience
  • 10+ years of leadership and broad organizational experience
  • Deep understanding of financial management
  • Experience fostering internal and external stakeholder relationships
  • Understanding and experience with fund valuation and fair value adjustments
  • Experience leading change initiatives
  • Prior experience with fund accounting
  • Understanding of differing accounting standards (PSAB and IFRS required; GAAP and ASPE considered an asset)
  • Ability to manage workload in an effective and efficient manner
  • Ability to work individually, as well as on a team
  • Experience with Alberta Treasury Board and government reporting requirements is an asset

Education and Designation

  • Professional accounting designation recognized in Canada (CPA or Legacy Designations)
  • Professional designation recognized in Canada related to finance and/or investing to be considered an asset (CFA, CIPM, etc.)
  • University Business degree (MBA preferred) – related field such as Finance and Accounting considered an asset
