Strategic Importance: Healthcare, rural health

You may be surprised to learn that one of the world’s leading providers of cardiovascular imaging is headquartered right here in Alberta.

Since 2007, Circle Cardiovascular has been developing advanced software solutions for analyzing heart health. Their software helps medical professionals diagnose and treat heart conditions by providing powerful tools that unlock data insights from CT and MRI imaging. This empowers reliable decision-making and improves patient outcomes.

The impacts are being felt from Calgary to Cleveland. Nanton to New York. Tofield to Tokyo.

“Circle’s technology helps remote teams access expert-level diagnostics without needing extensive local infrastructure or onsite cardiologists.”

Alberta Tech With a Global Reach

Today, Circle is a globally recognized leader, with its solutions used to analyze over 50,000 cardiac scans every day, in over 90 countries and by over 70% of the world’s top hospitals.

Circle CEO Erkan Akyuz says that Alberta offers several strategic advantages for Circle. This includes strong government innovation support, access to a world-class healthcare system, a competitive business climate and a dynamic biotech environment that fosters medtech growth and global reach.

Improving Outcome for Rural Albertans

Their technology isn’t solely being used in big city hospitals with world-renowned cardiology programs. Circle is facilitating the delivery of cardiac care to rural communities where expertise and infrastructure are limited.

“Circle’s technology helps remote teams access expert-level diagnostics without needing extensive local infrastructure or onsite cardiologists,” Akyuz explains.

“We’re helping bridge gaps and reduce disparities in access for rural populations.”

Access to Capital Powers Growth

Strategic capital at key stages has allowed Circle to market its cardiovascular imaging software suite worldwide. It has helped the company maintain over half its workforce in Alberta, supporting the province’s innovation ecosystem.

Through capital programs like the Accelerate Funds (managed by Yaletown Partners, with Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC) as a key investor), Circle was able to access early-stage investment that helped it secure additional private capital and scale rapidly.

“This funding expedited the development of advanced cardiac imaging modules, pushing Circle’s solutions into new clinical verticals,” Akyuz says.

It is one more example illustrating why access to capital is the heartbeat that drives innovation in Alberta.
