Strategic Importance: Healthcare, rural health, advanced education
Fluid Biomed is a medical device company founded by two Alberta neurosurgeons: Dr. Alim Mitha and Dr. John Wong. They wanted to create safer, more effective tools for treating brain aneurysms – a dangerous condition where a blood vessel weakens and can burst, causing a stroke or even death.
Their minimally invasive solution is benefiting communities by making complex brain treatments safer, simpler, and more widely accessible.
“Our team developed the world’s first bioabsorbable brain stent — a tiny device that once implanted by a specialist, seals off the brain aneurysm, supports healing inside the blood vessel, and then safely dissolves,” Dr. Mitha explains.

“With our cutting-edge medical device technology, Fluid Biomed is contributing to a more efficient, patient-centred healthcare system that benefits all Canadians.”
Reducing Stays and Freeing Beds
“This innovation could help thousands of patients avoid the risks of permanent metal implants and lifelong medication,” Dr. Mitha adds, noting that patients can go home the next day, and don’t need to spend extra time in a hospital or hotel.
“By advancing minimally invasive treatments and potentially reducing the need for repeat surgeries or lifelong medications, our technology can help lower strain on the healthcare system.”
Integrated Thought Leadership
Fluid Biomed was formed through a collaboration between doctors, engineers, and scientists at the University of Calgary – one of Canada’s leading centres for brain and cardiovascular research. The province’s strong health system, innovative universities, and entrepreneurial culture have been essential to Fluid’s success.
A Coordinated Support Network
As proud Albertans, Fluid’s cofounders believe innovations created here should benefit the world – while bringing economic opportunity, research excellence, and skilled jobs back to our province.
They appreciate the role Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC) has played in Fluid Biomed’s progress, as a facilitator and an indirect fund investor.
“Their early confidence in our vision and support of the VC funds they have brought to the province helped us move rapidly from concept to clinical trials and attract top-tier global investors,” Dr. Wong says.
Looking Forward
Fluid Biomed will be expanding clinical trials and bringing this life-changing technology to patients around the world. Continued growth will result in high-value jobs and showcase Alberta as a leader in medical innovation.
