Paul G. Haggis, Chairman

Paul Haggis is currently Chair of the Compensation and Governance Committee of Athabasca Oil Corp.  He continues to serve as a Director of UBC Investment Trust and is a Director and Audit Chair of Advantage Oil and Gas.   He has retired as a Director and Chairman of Canadian Pacific Railway.   Paul is also an Investment Committee Advisor and former Chairman of ICBC’s Investment Committee.  He has led the restructuring of CA Bancorp as its Chair and for Prime Restaurants Inc.  He was previously the President and CEO for one of Canada’s leading pension funds, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS).  Paul restructured the organization and implemented dramatic operating and cultural change to lead OMERS to its best year ever in 2006.  Under his leadership, assets grew by $15.8 billion to $48 billion with value added of $2.8 billion. Paul has provided executive leadership in roles with organizations such as the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSPIB) and Metropolitan Life.  Paul was the head of Met Life’s non-insurance operations from 1990 to 1993.  He was part of Met’s Strategic Research Group operating out of New York, and closed as Chief Operating Office of Canadian operations.  As President and Chief Executive Officer for Alberta Treasury Branches (ATB) from 1996 to 2001, he led ATB to record profitability and market share growth.

Barry Heck, Vice Chairman

Barry’s professional career is focused on the formation, management and growth of a wide range of technologies and businesses. Barry has an extensive range of experience in finance and investing, private equity and venture capital transactions, executive leadership, M&A transactions and technology start-ups and commercialization and is an active corporate director covering a wide range of industries and businesses and sits on the board of directors of several companies. Barry is currently the President, CEO and member of the Board of Directors of WinSport (Calgary Olympic Development Association), a winter sport institute providing world-class sport facilities and programs. WinSport supports national sport organizations, encourages educational opportunities and subsidizes the operation of unique training and recreational facilities in Calgary at Canada Olympic Park and at the Canmore Nordic Centre, which are used by the nation’s top athletes and the general public. Barry is also the President and Principal Partner of EL Merchant Capital, a private merchant capital and corporate finance and M&A firm. In addition, he was previously the Chair of the Alberta Economic Development Authority (AEDA).  Mr. Heck has a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta.

R. Geoffrey Browne, Director

Geoffrey Browne has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry in Canada, the U.S and London, England.  He was head of private equity for Merrill Lynch Canada and he is a founder and Managing Partner of MWI & Partners, a private equity firm. Prior to founding MWI, he was a senior executive with Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and CIBC Wood Gundy Inc. for over 20 years.  The last position he held at CIBC was Chief of Staff for CIBC World Markets. Geoff is active on numerous other corporate and not-for-profit Boards, and is one of three independent members of the Investment Review Committee of UBS Global Asset Management (Canada) Co.

Dr. Vicky J. Sharpe, Director

Dr. Sharpe was the Founding President and CEO of SDTC, and while CEO, she increased the public funding pool from $100 million in 2001 to over $1.4 billion in 2014, and mobilized private sector capital resulting in more than $4 billion of investments for project and commercialization activities. The resulting innovations enable industry, ranging from oil and gas, mining, power, transportation, forestry and waste management sectors to become more productive and profitable while boosting exports.  With over 35 years of experience in the energy industry, Dr. Sharpe has successfully integrated sustainable development into business. As VP of Ontario Hydro International Inc., Dr. Sharpe created new global revenue streams for environmental and energy utilization practices.  Dr. Sharpe has broad governance experience (ICD.D 2005); is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC) and Carbon Management Canada Research Institutes (CMCRI) amongst others. Recently she joined the Board of QUEST (Quality Urban Energy Systems for Tomorrow).  Dr. Sharpe has served on numerous technology and industry association committees, such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Forum and chaired the National Advisory Board on Energy, Science and Technology. Vicky sits on EnerTech Capital’s Advisory Board and on the Advisory Panel for Mercer’s Sustainable Opportunities Fund.  Dr. Sharpe holds a PhD in Microbiology and Surface Chemistry, as applied to water pollution control, from Trent University in the United Kingdom. She has received several awards and recently was appointed as Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

Brad Zumwalt, Director

Brad Zumwalt has been growing technology companies for over 20 years and has been instrumental in leading technology companies such as Image Club Graphics,, and Veer Incorporated. These companies have been successfully acquired by large industry leaders such as Adobe Systems, Getty Images and Corbis. In 2000 Brad was a founding partner of Social Venture Partners Calgary, a unique non-profit funding partnership that combines a venture capital approach with local philanthropy. Brad has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 honorees (1999), and with Calgary’s Generosity of Spirit Award (2001).  In 2006 Veer Incorporated was recognized as one of Calgary’s Best Places to Work.
