Position: Vice President Investments (Funds and Co-Investment)

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President Investment (VPI) position is responsible for leading and managing investment activities of the corporation together with the Senior Investment team. This is a full-time position based in Edmonton or Calgary.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Corporation’s co-investment strategy, including the development of co-investment policies, investment criteria, investment processes and investment terms. Once implemented, lead the co-investment team.
  • Together with the other VPI, lead the strategic planning for the Corporation’s fund investments, including the development of AEC fund investment policies, investment criteria, investment processes and investment terms, and be responsible for the implementation of the plan and achieving the KPIs of the organisation.
  • Together with the other VPI, lead all aspects of the day-to-day management of AEC’s fund investment, including allocating staffing resources to fund investment activities and directly supervise the investment team.
  • Ensure governance and oversight of the portfolio and contribute to the quarterly reporting and presentation to the Board of Directors.
  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders, including GP’s, LP’s, advisors (financial, legal, etc.), the broader venture capital and private equity communities and key players in the ecosystem, as well as monitoring, managing and leveraging relationships with investments.
  • Represent AEC externally and be an active communicator of the organization’s strategies and objectives, including representing AEC at key industry conferences and participating on speaking panels.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or professional designation in a related field.  
  • 10-15 years of directly related experience, or a combination of directly related education and experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience in the origination, evaluation, execution and portfolio management of private equity and/or venture capital fund investments.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing co-investments or direct investments.
  • Experience leading and managing a team.
  • Experience working in a VC firm or technology start-up an asset.
  • Ability to develop alternative solutions and resolve problems through the application of research, knowledge and insights.
  • Ability to think strategically and ensure that individual tasks result in achieving the organizations overall mission and mandate.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple priorities, including existing investments, ongoing investment processes, and other business and administrative demands.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and consultative manner with internal and external stakeholders and ensure that their needs are represented in the decision making to achieve win-win situations.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills; including ability to influence others without formal authority.
  • A proven self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset and the capacity to work collaboratively and autonomously as needed.
  • Validated network of business, personal and professional contacts and resources.
